Galesburg has something very unique, a Downtown that has not only survived, but retained much of its vibrancy throughout the vast changes of the past decades. This did not happen by accident, but instead because a group of forward-thinking, dedicated citizens - including property owners, merchants, city officials, and other community leaders - decided that they would take action to make it happen. This was the beginning of the Galesburg Downtown Council, and an equally dedicated group of citizens continue to work diligently to ensure the ongoing success of Galesburg's Downtown.

SPECIAL SERVICE AREA (SSA)

This Map shows the geographic area or primary area of corporate activity known as the Special Service Area (SSA) in the City of Galesburg, Illinois.  Special Service Area 1 consists of all the property on the west by Cedar Street and on the east by Chambers Street, and extending within one block north and one and one-half blocks south on East Main Street.

The conventional Special Service Area is based on the property tax paid by the property owners.  Individual property owners within the SSA are assessed at the same rate. The fees paid are proportional to the value of the properties. Special service area property taxes appear on the taxpayer's regular property tax bill. Each property owner is assessed $2.50 per $100 equalized assessed valuation.

A Special Service Area can be used only to provide services or make improvements not generally available. These monies are managed by the Galesburg Downtown Council Board.
